Big bats binge bad bugs: Variation in crop pest consumption by common bat species

چکیده

As generalist predators, insectivorous bats exploit fluctuations in prey distribution and abundance. A more nuanced understanding of the influence on arthropod pests requires documentation pest species consume conditions associated with variation rates consumption. Here, we used high-throughput metabarcoding DNA extracted from bat feces to investigate diets 180 representing three Vespertilionidae common southeastern US, a region dominated by agriculture pine plantations. We detected 23 agricultural diets, including responsible for severe economic damage, such as Helicoverpa zea, Spodoptera frugiperda, Chloridea virescens Chrysodeixis includens. Incidence consumption was high: 61% all had consumed at least one species, each consuming an average 1.7 species. The likelihood row crops size varied large foliage-roosting (Lasiurus seminolus) greater variety larger than smaller crevice, cavity, cave roosting (Nycticeus humeralis, Myotis austroriparius). Likelihood also among sampling periods (season) different sizes (as reflected wing length mass). Overall, higher late summer season during spring or early summer, bats. Bat characteristics seasonality were generally effective geographic features weather predicting patterns. Strategies enhancing services agroecosystems should strive maintain enhance diverse populations landscape scale protecting augmenting roost structures appropriate Our finding widespread contributes mounting evidence worldwide important role play systems highlights value incorporating conservation into integrated management programs globally.

Chirosurveillance: The use of native bats to detect invasive agricultural pests

Invasive insect pests cost the agricultural industry billions of dollars annually in crop losses. Timely detection of pests is critical for management efficiency. Innovative pest detection strategies, such as environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques, combined with efficient predators, maximize sampling resolution across space and time and may improve surveillance. We tested the hypothesis that tempe...

Good Bugs Vs . Bad Bugs

Control of micro-organisms during completion of hydraulically fractured wells is a significant component in successful development of a production system. Detrimental bacteria—“bad bugs”—such as sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) introduced into the reservoir during drilling or completion, can facilitate biogenic sulfide production, resulting in souring of production fluids and gas, iron sulfide f...

Painting maps with bats: species distribution modelling in bat

20 Species distribution models (SDMs) offer an effective tool for identifying species 21 conservation requirements and forecasting how global environmental changes will affect 22 species diversity and distribution. This approach is particularly relevant for bats because their 23 nocturnal behaviour hinders detectability and identification in flight. Despite their important 24 contribution to gl...

Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bats

ABsrnAcr.-Rafinesque's big-eared bats (Cc1)'llOrhinus mjinesquit) use bridges as day roosts in parts of their range, but information on bridge use across their range is lacking. From May to Aug. 2002 we surveyed 1129 bridges (12.5%) within all 46 counties of South Carolina to determine use and selection of bridges as day roosts by big-eared bats and to document their distribution across the sta...

Bat consumption in Thailand

BACKGROUND Human consumption of bats poses an increasing public health threat globally. Communities in which bat guano is mined from caves have extensive exposure to bat excreta, often harvest bats for consumption, and are at risk for bat-borne diseases. METHODS This rapid ethnographic study was conducted in four provinces of Thailand (Ratchaburi, Sakaeo, Nakorn Sawan, and Phitsanulok), where...
